I was grief stricken over racial injustice, death, and uncertainty.&nbsp; All I could do was to paint things black. I put a coat of black paint on a sheet of paper, a coat of graphite on a gessoed panel, and a coat of black over North Carolina red clay. It was as if all my brush could paint was a spell against hatred, racism, and anger. My hand moved in sadness and respect. Words feel useless and yet to say nothing is untenable.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"912\" src=\"https:\/\/www.catherinewhite.com\/roughideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/01-summer-1024x912.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.catherinewhite.com\/roughideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/01-summer-1024x912.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.catherinewhite.com\/roughideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/01-summer-300x267.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.catherinewhite.com\/roughideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/01-summer-768x684.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.catherinewhite.com\/roughideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/01-summer.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPELL TO BE SAID AGAINST HATRED<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until each breath refuses <em>they, those, them<\/em>.<br>Until the <em>Dramatis Personae<\/em> of the book\u2019s first page says, \u201cEach one is you.\u201d<br>Until hope bows to its hopelessness only as one self bows to another.<br>Until cruelty bends to its work and sees suddenly: <em>I<\/em>.<br>Until anger and insult know themselves burnable legs of a useless table.<br>Until the unsurprised unbidden knees find themselves bending.<br>Until fear bows to its object as a bird\u2019s shadow bows to its bird.<br>Until the ache of the solitude inside the hands, the ribs, the ankles.<br>Until the sound the mouse makes inside the mouth of the cat.<br>Until the inaudible acids bathing the coral.<br>Until what feels no one\u2019s weighing is no longer weightless.<br>Until what feels no one\u2019s earning is no longer taken.<br>Until grief, pity, confusion, laughter, longing know themselves mirrors.<br>Until by <em>we<\/em> we mean I, them you the muskrat, the tiger, the hunger.<br>Until by <em>I<\/em> we mean as a dog barks, sounding and vanishing and  sounding and vanishing completely.<br>Until by <em>until<\/em> we mean I, we, you, them, the muskrat, the tiger, the hunger, the lonely barking of the dog before it is answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014Jane Hirshfield in Ledger, Alfred A.
